Group Psychotherapy in Warsaw

Group psychotherapy is often underestimated – and unjustly so. For many people, working in a group turns out to be a deeper and more transformative experience than individual therapy. This is because the difficulties we bring to therapy are most often relational in nature – and it is precisely in relation to other people that we can see and change them.

How does group psychotherapy work?

A therapeutic group usually consists of 6-10 people who meet regularly – once a week, over an extended period – under the care of one or two psychotherapists. During sessions, participants talk about what they are experiencing: their difficulties, emotions, reactions to each other.

The therapist does not lead the discussion like a moderator. They observe what is happening in the group and help participants see how their patterns from life outside the group are replicated in group relationships. This work in the “live material” of relationships is the unique strength of group psychotherapy.

How is group therapy different from individual therapy?

In individual therapy, you work with one person – the therapist. In a group, you work with many people simultaneously: you hear their perspectives, respond to them, and see how they respond to you. This often reveals things that individual therapy cannot reach.

Moreover, the simple awareness that others are going through similar difficulties can be profoundly relieving.

For whom is group psychotherapy suitable?

Group psychotherapy is not recommended as a first form of support in an acute crisis. In such cases we suggest beginning with a psychotherapeutic consultation.
